BADMINTON TOURNAMENT
Guide for umpires on how to write the scores in the Score Sheet
This guide is to be read in conjunction with the New Badminton BWF Scoring document.
Before the game starts announce the event as follows: This is the match of ……… (example: The final of Open Men’s Double) between on my right ……… (names of players) and on my left …….. (names of players).
Refer to the Sample of Score Sheet 1.
First Set
1. At the start of the game, assume A to serve from the right service side and C as the receiver. (A and C are the initial server and receiver)
2. A/B wins the first point, write 1 on the score sheet. (hence 1 0)
3. A moves to the left side of the service court and serves to D.
4. A/B loses the point and Team C/D gets 1 point. Write the number 1 on Team C/D score
5. D serves from the left side of the court to A. (hence 1 1)
6. After that Team C/D lose the serve and Team A/B gets 1 point to become 2 (2 1)
7. Next B to serve to C.
8. Team C/D wins the point. Write 2 on the score sheet. (2 2)
9. C serves to B and C wins the point hence 3 point. (3 2)
10. C moves to the left side but loses the point and Team A/B gets one point adds their score to 3. (3 3)
11. Team C/D gets three points, hence 1, 2 and 3 on their score sheet.
12. Team A/B serves from the left side of the court (as they have odd number of score of 3), in this case A to serve to C.
13. Team A/B gets the serve and gets 4 points in sequence (3, 4, 5, and 6).
14. Continue the writing in order of who gets the points.
15. When one team reaches 11 points, there is an interval of 1 minute.
16. When one Team reaches 21, the game is awarded to the team which reached 21 points first. Write these scores in the boxes located on the top next to each team’s names.
17. In this case 21 are awarded to Team A/B and 15 to Team C/D
18. An interval of 2 minutes is allowed between first set and second set.
Second Set
- Continue as above for the second set. Team A/B gets 4 points consecutively, hence 1, 2, 3, 4 in their score.
- Team C/D gets 2 points and so on.
- When one team reaches 11 points, there is an interval of 1 minute
- When the teams reach 20 all, a deuce is required where there must be two points different in scores in order to award the winner to the set
- Team C/D gets 22 and Team A/B gets 20; hence Team C/D wins the set.
- Transfer these scores to the boxes located at the top near each Team’s names for the second set
- An interval of 2 minutes will apply between second set and third set.
Third Set
1 In the third set, Team C/D gets 2 point, 1, 2 in their row.
2 Team A/B then gets 3 points, 1 2 3 in their row.
3 Continue scoring this way. When one team reaches 11 points, there is an interval of 1 minute and the teams change (swap) side of the court.
4 When they reach 20 all, a deuce is required as in second set.
5 When the score continues to be equal or less then two points in difference, the deuce continues until the first team reaches 30.
6 Team A/B gets 30 and Team C/D gets 29 so the winner for this set is Team A/B.
NOTE:
As shown on Sample Sheet 2, the scores can be written on the sheet continuously without any gap, such as 1234567 etc. up to 21 for the First Set, up to 22 for the Second Set and the third Set it is up to 30 points.
